SIERRA VISTA - The driver of the 2005 Dodge Durango involved in a single-vehicle rollover that killed two people on Highway 191 Tuesday was booked into the Bisbee County Jail by U.S. Customs.

Driver Alberto Sanchez Antonio, 22, of Mexico, awaits federal smuggling charges and probably will be charged by Cochise County for two counts of manslaughter, said Benjamin Buller, the investigating officer for the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Antonio fled the accident scene on foot along with one other occupant of the vehicle, Flavio Fagundez De Olivera, 23, of Brazil.

De Olivera is being held under federal jurisdiction as a material witness to the accident, Buller said.

With the assistance of U.S. Border Patrol air support, De Olivera and Antonio were located in the afternoon hours after the wreck, said Sgt. Dan Long of the Department of Public Safety.

The Dodge pickup carried 12 occupants.

Reyna Antonio Perez, 30, of Mexico, was pronounced dead at the scene. A second man also was pronounced dead, but his name is being withheld until the Mexican Consulate is able to contact his family.

The other eight occupants are still receiving medical treatment at hospitals in the region, Buller said.

A woman, thought to have been killed when DPS initially responded to the wreck at northbound mile post 27.8, is for now in serious, "probably critical," condition, Buller said. The release of her name is pending notification of her family.

"We have a tremendous amount of people who still have to be notified," he said.

Long said there were two other drivers nearby who witnessed the single-car crash. Witness accounts suggest the Durango, which was recently reported stolen in Tucson, was speeding when it came upon a slower moving vehicle. The driver then left the roadway after braking, over-corrected several times and ultimately rolled the Dodge over almost two times.

DPS received the accident call at 11:21 a.m. Tuesday, and four Critical Air/Lifeline Helicopters were called to the scene.

" What a coincidence reading your story about the Bisbee poetry festival. Just last night I was telling a friend that I had heard Lawrence Ferlinghetti read his poetry at the Bisbee Poetry festival in 1979. It was a wonderful weekend mingling with poets. I am glad the tradition was revived in 2006. "

Confident and a born leader, he always took care of those around him and brought out the best in all Marines he encountered. Semper Fi MAC "
