TUCSON — Picking up 36 points in forfeits, the Buena Colt wrestling team routed Class 4A Sabino, 75-4 in a match wrestled at Sabino High School Wednesday afternoon.

The win, Buena’s eighth without a loss, set the stage for the Colts to make a run at the Douglas Invitational championship this weekend.

“I was a little disappointed that they (Sabino) had so many open weight classes,” Buena coach Dan Southard said. “Being a 4A school I would think they would have had a little stronger squad.”

Buena won all but one bout.

Jimmy Byrd started the Colts off with a forfeit win at 140 pounds.

The Colts then went on a four-pin streak that put Buena up 36-0. Ryan Hegedus pinned Trace Eubanks in 1:33 at 145 pounds, Emilio Gonzales pinned Wyen Fredrickson in 1:19 at 152 pounds,

Carl Larimer won by a fall over Andrew Salning in 1:02 at 160 pounds and Brian Seiler had the fastest pin of the day, 35-seconds, over David Glennon at 171 pounds.

Buena wrestlers Kevin Treftz (189), Anthony Kirkpatrick (215) and Robert Ellis (heavyweight) each won by forfeit that increased the score to 54-0, before entering the lightweight classes.

Kyle Rae (103 pounds) and Marcus Williams (112) picked up the final two forfeits giving Buena a 66-0 lead with four bouts remaining.

Rene Miramontes won a 14-0 technical decision over Vance Stein at 119 and Brett Madden pinned Matt Bonilla in 2:32 at 125 pounds.

Buena’s Ian Beauregard suffered the Colts’ lone loss, losing a 9-1 decision to Haden Willingham at 130 pounds.

“He’s (Willingham) their best wrestler and is very good,” Southard said. “Ian wrestled well, but Willingham was just too good.”

Ben Serpa wrapped things up for the Colts with a 1:53 pin of Shane Kirk at 135 pounds.

After the Douglas Invitational, the Colt matmen will be off until Jan. 4-5 when they compete in the Marana Duals, before returning home for their last home match of the season on Jan. 9 against Class 4A Cienega.
