SIERRA VISTA — Being blind has not stopped 17-year-old Joe Jarboe.

The Buena High School junior is a wrestler on the Colt junior varsity wrestling team and has been an inspiration for his teammates throughout the years.

“I have known Joey for over 10 years and you have to admire his absolute aggressive approach to life,” Buena head wrestling coach Dan Southard said. “He isn’t going to be held back in anything.”

Jarboe started wrestling in the sixth grade at Apache Middle School and wrestled as a freshman at Buena. He sat out his sophomore year and returned this year as a junior.

“I plan on wrestling again next year,” Jarboe said.

This year Jarboe competed in five junior varsity matches.

“I like the physical contact,” Jarboe said. “I can feel my opponent and I know where his extremities are and I know the moves to get him to the mat.”

In practice, Jarboe wrestles against David Strebe from the junior varsity team, as well as varsity wrestlers Jimmy Byrd and Michael Bergstrom.

“Strebe is a very good friend and probably the most helpful,” Jarboe said. “He works with me on technique. My favorite move is the fireman’s carry and the Peterson.”

“He’s a inspiration for everyone on the team,” Southard said. “Everyone wants to help and teach him. He’s improved over 100 percent since he starting wrestling with us. He really concentrates on his technique.”

In addition to wrestling, Jarboe is involved in an all-around academic and extra-criculum program at Buena High School.

He plays trumpet in the Buena Jazz Band and is in the Concert Choir. He also hold the role of secretary for all the various Buena Choirs.

With his wrestling, band and choir, Jarboe still maintains between a 3.0 and 4.0 GPA in academics, taking, among others, World History, Algebra and English.

What spare time is left in his busy schedule, Jarboe finds listening to Country and Western music relaxing and also plays ping pong with his friends and family members.

“I also like trains — the real ones,” Jarboe said.

Jarboe has set his goals on attending a trade school in Phoenix, where he would like to learn street and road construction

While Jarboe has completed his season as a wrestler, the Buena varsity team continues to compete as the season winds down.

Buena, along with 20 other teams, will compete in the Salpointe Catholic Invitational this weekend in Tucson. It will be the last competition of the regular season for the Colts before hosting the Class 5A Division I and II Regionals on Feb. 2. After that it’s the state individual and team tournaments the following weeks.

“We are hoping for a top five finish,” Southard said. “There are some very good teams entered and it could be very close.”

Salpointe coach Tim Brown looks for a close battle for the team championship between Buena, Pueblo, Ironwood Ridge, Cienega and Deer Valley.

Other teams who will field strong teams include Amphi, Canyon del Oro, Desert Ridge, Westwood and host Salpointe.

Other teams entered include Cholla, Desert View, Douglas, Marana, Mountain Pointe, Nogales, Palo Verde, Sabino, Saguaro, Sahuaro and Santa Rita.

Southard has entered Marcus Owens (105), Marcus Williams (114), Rene Miramontes (121), Brent Madden (127), Ian Beauregard (132), Brice Madden (137), Jimmy Byrd (142), Emilio Gonzales (147), Carl Larimer (154), David Jones (162), Bryan Sieler (173), Kevin Treftz (191), Anthony Kirkpatrick (217) and Robert Ellis (Hwt.)

Wrestling starts at 9 a.m. Friday and will run all day. Saturday’s session starts at 9 a.m. with the championship medal round scheduled for 5 p.m.

“We will start the championship earlier if we are well ahead of time,” Brown said.

A concession stand will be available.

Cost is $5 for each session or $10 for all three sessions.
