Disappearing pay phones
Tuesday, July 7, 2009 2:15 AM MSTOn the corner of West 90th Street and West End Avenue is one of four remaining outdoors walk-in phone booths in Manhattan. Inside, the booth’s original blue paint is chipped off, revealing layers of rust.
On a recent Friday afternoon, Rick Avilla walked into the phone booth, dropped in a quarter and picked up the phone.

Once again, no one asked us to be on this year’s garden tour. That makes 15 years straight. Not only were we not on the tour, the street directions to the selected homes were carefully written so no one would have to pass our house. Just because our lawn looks like a post-hurricane clean-up site doesn’t mean we don’t like flowers. Just because I miss huge swatches of borders with the weed whacker, should we be treated like second-class citizens?

here used to be one, but now there are two companies charging — in the dead of winter — $999 for a nine-night tour to five Chinese cities, including roundtrip airfare from the West Coast, accommodations, three meals each day and daily escorted sightseeing.
New Rotary officers installed at evening event
The Rotary Club of Sierra Vista celebrated the 2008-09 Rotary year and installed new officers on June 29 at the Windemere Hotel in Sierra Vista. Nearly 100 members, spouses and friends attended the evening dinner event.
Outgoing President, John Spengler, thanked all the directors and officers who provided dedicated service and action for the past year. “This year was phenomenal and went way beyond expectations in terms of making our dreams come true!” declared Spengler. President Spengler’s list of successful Rotary activities included such projects as the Blanket Program, distribution of dictionaries and thesauruses to school kids, the Africa water project, Polio inoculation in Caborca, Mexico; Food Pantry, Employee and Student of the month, Salvation Army, Project Graduation, July 4 events, scholarships to local students, youth development and many more.
Brooks celebrates 97th birthday
A small family party was held on June 30 for Virginia J. Brooks, who turned 97 years old on June 30.
The party was held at her daughter’s home in Bisbee.
