Eddie Gonzales, a resident who lives close to the crash site, said that he was at home with his family at about 8:30 p.m. when they felt an explosion that shook the house.
Stepping outside, Gonzales “saw a fireball, like a bomb.”
The resulting fire, spurred on by winds, covered an approximate length of about three football fields.
The Sunnyside Fire District has sent about 10 of its volunteer personnel to the scene, said Adriana Rodriguez, dispatcher for the district.
“We sent out mostly all of our trucks. We sent out the tender,” Rodriguez said.
The Douglas Fire Department has also sent out multiple fire units, as well as ambulances to the scene, however it was not immediately known if anyone had been transported for medical treatment, said Matt King, department spokesman.
Several local, state and federal law enforcement agencies have responded to the area in support of ongoing efforts, including the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the U.S. Border Patrol.
“We do have agents on the ground supporting that effort,” said Jordan Flanagan, supervisory agent with the USBP Tucson Sector. “Right now, they’re basically doing traffic control to support the other operation.”
DPS Spokesman Ofcr. Kameron Lee said that military police from Fort Huachuca were also responding to the area to help secure the scene.
9:45 P.M.
SIERRA VISTA — A spokeswoman for Davis-Monthan Air Force Base confirmed that a military aircraft did go down, however further details were not immediately available.
“At this time, I’ve only been told of one (aircraft),” said Sgt. Courtney Richardson.
Shortly before 9 p.m., the Cochise County Sheriff’s Department was notified of plane wreckage in a front yard at a property along Leslie Canyon Road near the Cochise County Fairgrounds outside Douglas.
Sheriff’s deputies responded and together with the U.S. Border Patrol, secured the scene, where the wreckage has sparked a fire near a natural gas pipeline.
Douglas and Sunnyside fire departments have also responded to the area.
